Biagiotti Pienza – Handcrafted wrought iron ornaments
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Alfredo Biagiotti established the Biagiotti – Ferro Battuto’s firm and started the working of iron and other metals, such as copper and brass, to face the new and several demands of that period. Alfredo’s son, Mario, learnt enthusiastically to be a blacksmith, specializing himself in the artistic working of wrought iron. Nowadays the firm is run by father Mario, his three sons Alberto, Samuele and Alfredo and by the nephew Giovanni, who joined himself by continuing the tradition of working with iron.
The design phase begins with the drawing traced out on a sheet of paper, on the ground or at the work bench. These invaluable notes are jotted down with care and distil a lifetime work. Then an appropriate type of iron is chosen, soft and malleable or more resistant depending on the kind of object to be produced. The bases are cut and brought to working temperature of 900 to 1000°.
The rest is art, an art that stems from experience and manual skills but also from the colours of the earth, the inspiration of the landscape, the nature and the seasons. Guided by expert hands hammer and chisels shape and notch giving form to the metal which as if by magic is slowly transformed. Some of the art works come from Biagiotti’s family fantasy, others are perfect reproductions of ancient works coming from different periods, such as the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. It’s furthermore possible to order art works according to the demand of the customer. The workshop which has two sales points, one in front of the cathedral in Pienza and the other just out of town, mainly produces artistic craft objects: dragons, torches, candelabras, chandeliers, and irons, fixtures for outdoor use and many other things. Every item is unique and original, the fruit of constant research, imagination and creativity.
Their art works can be viewed and pre-ordered in the elegant showroom of La Meridiana (1023 Budapest, Ürömi u. 45).
